A trip to Pottsville
Jan. 13-14, 2001
With daylight fading, we decided to check out Calvary Cemetery, over on the south side of town (maybe even in Mount Carbon). Some of the obits mentioned interment in the "crypt," so we looked for buildings. What appeared to be the mausoleum was locked, but right along the road nearby we immediately happened upon yet another lucky find -- Mae Shay's grave, complete with wreath.
As I ran up toward a Walsh stone that Jacqueline had found (which ended up being unrelated), I found a stone for Kenny -- and Bill, with the other side of Dad's "1932-" blank.
After returning to the Quality Hotel, we set out for an early dinner and decided to try Holahan's, a few blocks down Centre Street, which looked like a good place. Inside it was less of a restaurant and more of a tavern, but we stayed for a couple of Yuengling drafts to be polite. Bartender Bill O'Reilly used to live in Washington, so he regaled us with stories about that. The only other people there were a couple from Mauch Chunk (Jim Thorpe). The guy had some sort of Molly Maguires connection, so we talked a little about that.
We almost stopped at Roma Pizza on Market Street, but we decided to get back to the hotel and call either there or Pottsville Pizzeria (mentioned in the Coal Region site's top 10) for delivery. Turns out nobody in Pottsville delivers, so we drove back toward Cavalry Cemetery to get a takeout order from Pottsville Pizzeria. Way too small and full of scary people, so back to Roma, which actually has seating. No beer, though, so we got takeout there. It was OK.
